The Coolest People I Know: Justin Meyer

Describe yourself in three words.
Social, Adventurous, Excitable

Did you always know you wanted to be a photographer?
Not at all, still not sure I want to be one.

What’s your favorite memory surrounding a shoot? Where was it?
I was shooting for Midwest Living up in Grand Marais–shooting a story about commercial fishing on the lake–and I drove all night to get up there. Then as soon as we pulled up, we got out on Lake Superior in this little boat. As we walked out, we were barraged with seagulls trying to get the leftover fish they leave out from the night before so that the seagulls don’t follow the boat out and try to eat the fish as they pull in the nets. It was a surreal experience with perfect weather and mysterious morning fog.

If you had to give advice to a high school student about to go college, what would it be in one sentence?
There are so many great professions that aren’t marketed that well, so you may not end up being a “doctor, lawyer, or accountant,” but there are so many other great professions, especially related to sales.

To a college student entering the workforce?
Put in the work. It is easy to idealize people who are well established in their profession, but they most often got there through years and years of tough work.

As a creative person myself, I’ve always had a special place in my heart for people that find a way to do creative work for a living–especially here in Des Moines. Justin does exactly that. I’ve known him for three years, and he’s never failed to inspire me. Not only is he a super engaged, outgoing person with a great outlook on life, but he’s extremely talented. I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’ve gotten to work with him, but more so for the amazing role model he’s always been to me. xx
